Each plugin specifies a list of file extensions (also listed in each plugin's Available plugins section, under File filter). The extensions are used to associate one or more file types with the plugin: when a compared file's extension matches an extension in the plugin's list, the plugin is considered to be a suggested plugin. A note about Meld: Meld does work on OS X and Windows, but there are no all-in-one packages for those systems available at the moment. But on Windows I use WinMerge, on Linux Meld (which is also available for Mac), currently using twdiff, I already tried FileMerge.app, and going to try DiffMerge. Plugins are not included by default when you install WinMerge, you have to select them during installation to get them installed. For example, you can use a plugin to extract text data from MS Word files for WinMerge to compare. WinMerge plugins are custom dlls or scriptlets, written in the COM API, that preprocess data before a comparison. All of them provide 3-way comparison, which gives them a big advantage against WinMerge. There are many file comparing tools, like Beyond Compare (freeware for Windows and Linux), Meld (open-source application for Mac, Linux and Windows) and kdiff3 (open-source for Linux and Windows). I have a few hundred files that I need to compare and it's not practical to have to open the files and manually and save the report. I need a diff tool that has a command line option to create and save a diff report that looks easy to read, something like the html report produced by WinMerge. ![]()
